How far can you go to save yourself?
These words came to my mind when I read a hard-hitting novel by @awaiskhanauthor. I admire his guts, he is constantly exposing hypocrisy and the ruthless patriarchal male chauvinist pigs of Pakistan. After reading The Company of Strangers I became a fan of his writing.
The novel is the story of a middle-class girl Ayesha Safdar. She is an ambitious and outspoken girl. She is working hard to complete her dreams. But women like her are threats to Pakistani society. She comes under the radar of Mafiya Raza Masood. Her wings were clipped and they put her in the cage. The acid of the patriarchal society burns her whole life.
I loved the writing style of the author. It's like you are watching the Edge of Seat thriller series on BBC. Few authors have the skill of Show don't tell method. And Awais excels in that skill. The crafting skills, the flow of the language, and character development are excellent. The story is woven beautifully in silk thread. You can feel the pain of Ayesha in your skin. The climax is jaw-dropping. I postponed my dinner to finish the Act III.
Somethings I didn't like about the novel. First, the flat characters are cliche. I didn't find Saquib in Act III. All characters have little physical description so it's hard to imagine them. The climax is a bit stretched. I hoped to see London more in the book but I couldn't.
But you have to read this book to understand the pain of Pakistan's women. And you will find hope in the book which will stay with u forever.
